Down East by Jack Dudley

Down East: Portraits of the Past is a photographic history of Down East from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Before the early 1900s, Down East was not considered isolated, it was the link for Carteret County and much of central North Carolina with the outside world by way of maritime traffic through Ocracoke and Beaufort Inlets. By 1930 the road was contructed from Beaufort to Atlantic, paving the way for numerous adventuresome photographers. The Images they recorded are divided into seventeen photo-chapters that provide a pictorial documentary of maritime scenes, churches, schools, post offices and various other landmarks. Over 650 images give vistors and newcomers an insight into Down East's colorful heritage and the homefolks an opportunity to relive the past. Hardcover, 351 pages.
